Sustainable Land Management and Soil Carbon Sequestration in Sub-Saharan Africa (IRD, CIRAD, CGIAR, ..)
Different stakeholders are joining to present some concrete initiatives illustrating the co-benefits at the crossroads of Rio conventions offered by agroecological practices in Africa. This session intend to illustrate how sustainable land management practices toward healthy soils can be an important component of the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) in Africa. Movies and documents (policy brief, books …) will complements the exchanges.

Soils an ally for climate change mitigation (ADEME)
Les sols sont le second réservoir terrestre de carbone après les océans et, en fonction de leur gestion, peuvent être un puits ou au contraire une source de gaz à effet de serre (GES). Ils sont un acteur crucial du climat, encore peu pris en compte dans les politiques publiques alors même qu’il existe de nombreuses options permettant de réduire les émissions de GES et d’accroître la séquestration de carbone. Cet évènement précisera les enjeux et discutera des outils et solutions permettant de gérer les flux de GES. Par ailleurs, cette meilleure gestion du statut carboné des sols permet également de contribuer aux enjeux de sécurité alimentaire ou de préservation de la biodiversité.

Carbon sequestration and Agriculture Agriculture, as the main means of subsistence and source of employment, needs to adapt to climate and demographic changes.
